His adaptation of Elementary Particles was one of the highlights of our 2014-15 season. Today, Julien Gosselin moves away from contemporary writing to bring together on stage texts by Leonid Andreev (1871-1919). A poignant farewell to a humanity and theatre of another era.

For the first time in his dazzling career, Julien Gosselin leaves the familiar spaces of the contemporary to meet characters who do not speak like us, who do not dress like us, who live in a society that is not the one in which we live. These beings from another time emerge from the works of the Russian author Leonid Andreev. They populate plays and news gathered in a show entitled Le Passé.

From 19th-century Russia to the early 1960s in the Godard and Truffaut style, this show with both nostalgic and humorous accents tells the story of the strength of a woman’s struggle, the abyss of a love confronted with savagery, the vertigo of a theatre director deprived of his audience… Video recordings, live music, images of the present. But also painted canvases, candles, orchestra pit, costumes and ancient decors. Between modernity and theatrical academism, Le Passé reveals visionary works that touch the climax of suffering and the beauty of the world.
