Equally at home in the theatre as in the cinema, Christophe Honoré brings these two artforms together in a family saga that mirrors the story of his own relatives, and where the stage is transformed into the setting for an outlandish film, one seen in a dream…
This is the story – and the destiny – of three generations of a French family, from the day after the allied bombing of Nantes in 1943 to the present day. A story which plays out like a film in a seemingly abandoned cinema. It even features Kiki and a few of her ten children. Father Puig is there too, even though he was banned years ago. And they are all here together because one of their grandchildren, the one who works in cinema, has something to tell them.
In Le Ciel de Nantes, Christophe Honoré combines theatre and cinema to give an unusual, sensitive, and tender take on the family drama and on what is handed down without being understood. What is left of the past that we share? What is there to inherit when all that remains of our birthright is a series of wrecked lives? How can we save our own skin without feeling like we are betraying our loved ones?
