The creator of the French comedy TV series “Les Deschiens” brings The Bourgeois Gentleman to the stage.
Accompanied by the Musiciens du Louvre, he takes on the role of Monsieur Jourdain, directing a zany and dreamlike comedy ballet.

Monsieur Jourdain is often dismissed as a ridiculous and stupidly ambitious man, who is vain, honour-seeking and prepared to do anything for social recognition. Yet Jérôme Deschamps sees more than this in Molière’s character, imagining a bourgeois who is bored and wants to better himself, someone who wants to leave his routine life, acquire culture and thus become a man of substance. A lone spirit who starts to dream…
In Jérôme Deschamps’ colourful comedy ballet, this daydream of a new existence becomes a dream for theatre. Staying true to the comic, offbeat world for which he is renowned, the director and actor sheds a burlesque, yet sensitive light on The Bourgeois Gentleman, bringing out the full humour of Molière’s play, which bursts onto the stage in music. But we also see the humanity of a whimsical and naive character, who marvels at the mirage of grandeur that he sees emerging before his very eyes.
