Conception, mise en scène et voix – Johanny Bert
From the imagination of director and puppeteer Johanny Bert, Hen offers audiences a joyful and provocative evening, cross-referencing 1930s Berlin cabarets and the contemporary queer scene.
Hen has a wide range of facial and bodily expressions. Glamorous and virile, raw and modest, Hen (pronounced “heun”, like the Swedish personal pronoun used to refer to a person in a gender-neutral way) cannot be confined to any single category. This chimeric creature explores questions of identity and gender in music and song. Neither transvestite, nor transsexual, nor transgender, Hen metamorphoses according to his/her desires, with humour and insolence, claiming the right to live outside the norms.
Made of foam, wood, metal and latex, this exuberant puppet is animated by two actors. Multi-faceted and transformable, Hen invites us to an evening inspired by the Berlin cabarets of the 1930s and the current queer theatre scene. Campaigning for a less discriminatory society, Hen asserts his/her intimate journey, sexual difference, freedom to exist and the range of identities that make up his/her humanity.
