A key figure in European theatre, Christoph Marthaler comes to Lyon for the first time with King Size, a vibrant mix of zany, musical and melancholic comedy.
King Size immerses the audience in the ostentatious decor of a bourgeois vaudeville, with striking blue woodwork, tapestries with kitsch flowers, thick carpets, gold bedside lamps and a king-size bed. An eccentric couple of singers, a bald pianist with a comb over and a spoiled old lady undergoing an existential crisis all meet – without really seeing each other – in an old-fashioned hotel room.
The audience watch with fascination as these weird and solitary beings go about their business. Trapped in their little idiosyncrasies, they sing, dance and play music by Mozart, Wagner, Boby Lapointe, Michel Polnareff and the Jackson Five. Christoph Marthaler’s genius lies in the mischievous and sensitive way he depicts the human paradox. Combining theatre and music, buffoonish fantasy and existential tragedy, his crazy operetta is a series of shifting, offbeat events, from the most irresistibly burlesque to the most unexpectedly absurd.
