In just a few years, Tiago Rodrigues has become one of the most prominent artists on the European scene. Combining poetry, confidences and politics, he invites audiences to share the actor’s process and erases the boundaries between reality, theatre and fiction.

Since he started out on the stage, Tiago Rodrigues has always considered theatre as a precious opportunity to bring people together. It is a place to meet, dream, talk and reinvent the present together. Whether by revisiting the classics, adapting novels or combining true stories with fiction, performances by this adventurous writer and director strive to poetically transform the world around us using the tools of art.
In By Heart, Tiago Rodrigues tells us the story of his grandmother who has gone blind and asks her grandson to choose a book that she could learn by heart. But what does “learn by heart” mean exactly? Every evening, he invites ten members of the audience onto the stage to learn and recite Shakespeare’s celebrated Sonnet 30. And each evening, a collective emerges from this experience, an “us” is born. We then find that this process of transmitting and sharing, which is at the core of every actor, is an act of resistance, a struggle against time, oblivion, absence and disappearance. It is a free and vibrant process that binds us together.
