Interweaving inspirations and eras, young director Aurore Fattier immerses William Shakespeare’s tragedy in modern times, creating an erotic fugue in the midst of destiny, desire and beauty.
The stage opens onto a Venice Carnival, and an oriental Garden of Eden and a luxury hotel room adjoining a swimming pool… Like a wedding night’s dream lost in the meanders of time, the play imagined by Aurore Fattier features the ascetics of a roman noir. “My Othello will be free jazz”, she explains, “with characters wearing black and white masks moving from one role to another and taking us into a vertiginous theatre inside the theatre, through different eras and locations: from Europe to America to a phantasmal Africa.”
Featuring ambition that knows no limits, punishment, lust, fatal beauty, chimeras, racial hatred and conjugal violence, this version of Othello has been designed as a visual and theatrical experience, taking us on a multi-dimensional adventure that interweaves the preciosity of Shakespeare’s text, the dreamlike splendour of the scenery and the contemporary nature of windows opening onto our modern world.
