In a society of widespread competition, market forces take precedence over friendship, art and dreams. Élise Vigier and Marcial Di Fonzo Bo open the doors of The Animal Kingdom by Roland Schimmelpfennig.
Roland Schimmelpfennig is one of the leading playwrights of modern-day German theatre. The Animal Kingdom is a satirical play on the excesses of our era – intertwining zany bleakness and dark humour in a tale of how a troupe of actors breaks down when faced with a society in which human values are being undermined by the mighty dollar.
Having played in the same musical show for six years, the artists suddenly find themselves in competition, plunged into an atmosphere of mistrust and betrayal.
“Schimmelpfennig lays bare behaviour that is completely individualistic and self-centred”, explains Élise Vigier, who co-directs this whimsical comedy with Marcial Di Fonzo Bo. Depicting the defeat of a collective utopia, making objects out of lives, yet celebrating the hallowed place of the theatre, The Animal Kingdom probes the proportion of light and darkness in the human soul.
