Denis Podalydès embarks the company from the Comédie-Française in a playful adaptation Les Fourberies de Scapin.
The port of Naples is awash with sails, masts, ladders, blocks of wood, and suspended fishing nets… For his Scapin the Schemer, Denis Podalydès wanted to create a set which brings to life the sleazy atmosphere of a dive. It is there that he sets the scene for one of Molière’s most famous plays. A work of pure comedy on a grand scale.
There are misunderstandings, fights, clever gambits, bragging, and other tomfoolery. Here, the age-long conflict between fathers and sons plays out through stories of love and wedding vows. Benjamin Lavernhe’s Scapin shows his boundless energy which carries the rest of the Company along in a spirit of fun and joyful ingenuity. It allows the full breadth of the actors’ talent to shine through and paints a beautiful homage to the theatre.
