Toni Servillo, Petra Valentini, Francesco Marino, Davide Cirri
Great Italian actor Toni Servillo breathes new life into Louis Jouvet’s drama classes. A celebration of the theatre as an antidote to the brutality of History.
A small table, a few chairs, a dais: in this atmosphere of utmost austerity, master and students develop their art. The teacher is Louis Jouvet. The students are those who are attending his classes at Paris’ Conservatoire national supérieur d’art dramatique, from February to September 1940. In the throes of the Second World War, the actor and director wanted to continue to impart the value of drama to younger generations.
Elvira (Elvire Jouvet 40) is a captivating opportunity to observe close up the way theatre shapes the hearts of actors and characters. Toni Servillo’s play invites us to step into the skin of the theatre, and to break into the mysterious world of acting and rehearsals. The creative process is revealed before us in all its qualities. It becomes a sign of hope, of salvation, an act of resistance against the erosion of substance.
