Sadnesses recounts the rise of the extreme right movement in Denmark and the moment which saw its leader mourning the death of his mother, who had hanged herself with the national flag. Anne-Cécile Vandalem presents her striking film images and music in order to paint a picture of an unstable lifestyle with the intention of communicating their value to our sense of sadness, the sadness of mourning about which the passage of time can do nothing, that of our natural feelings, which the ‘tyranny of positivity’ attempts to crush, and, most of all, the sadness inflicted upon ordinary people by others in order to be able to manipulate them more easily. This savant combination of music, film and acting accompanies our sense of helplessness without pathos and with the unique characteristic of Belgian theatre that enables it to find humour in even the darkest of circumstances.
