On 23 October 2002 during a performance of the musical comedy NorthWest at the Doubrovka Theatre in Moscow, 42 Chechen terrorists take the audience of 850 people hostage and demand the retreat of Russian troops from Chechnya, and today sees three women, a terrorist, a hostage and a doctor, recounting the events that led them to go to the theatre on that fateful evening. A savvy mix of authentic footage from the theatre, real witness interviews and the testimony of fictitious characters, this production reveals details of a dirty war with no winners. ARTiSHOCK, Kazakhstan’s first independent theatre, retraces with vigour the events of this tragedy, during which 130 hostages and 42 terrorists lost their lives following an assault by Russian forces after three days of negotiations.
