The young members of the Royal Velours Company first met as student actors at the Comédie-Française. In this documented theatrical serial, they analyse the Macron years with deliberate impertinence.
The stage is empty, except for a piano, a few chairs and a drum kit. The leader of the Royal Velours troupe – playwright, director and actor Hugues Duchêne – defines his work as a actor-centric theatre driven by encounters between the various characters. This means there are no impressive set effects, but rather the vibrancy of young artists committed to documenting Emmanuel Macron’s five-year presidency on stage.
This has resulted in Je m’en vais mais l’État demeure [I’m leaving, but the State remains], a five-part play covering political events currently unfolding in France. With personal asides, Hugues Duchêne links events in his own life to the stormy weather he witnesses countrywide, including right-wing primaries, the victories of Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron, the trial of Abdelkader Merah, the Yellow Vests movement and diplomatic crises.
Examining reality with conviction, as well as a great deal of irony, the members of Royal Velours give a playful and invigorating performance, combining small incidents with large modern day frescoes.
